From student coordinator in the Woodlands WISE program, to community member, to mentor, and to Woodlands staff, Elizabeth Huber continues to be a part of the WISE family at Woodlands High School.

“I gained a different understanding of the WISE program from each perspective,” said Ms. Huber. “In each role, I learned something new about what the program is about and what it is doing.”

elizabeth 1In 2003, Ms. Huber did her own WISE project at Woodlands. Her goal was to map out the land of the Woodlands campus to get a visual history of the school. Although accessing historical archives proved difficult, Ms. Huber, with the support of her mentor Dr. Constantine Andreadis, was able to overcome obstacles to have a successful WISE experience. She learned the importance of maintaining historical records and making them available to people. More importantly, she learned the importance of WISE.

“WISE has history at Woodlands, said Ms. Huber. “Having history and being able to look at it and understand it is very important. It gives you a direction to go in. It allows you to see what hasn’t worked. It gives you a chance to reintroduce things. It’s okay for the WISE Program at Woodlands to continue changing and developing, because it has been doing so all along. It’s not static. By understanding this, we are able to embrace change more confidently and freely.”

“I believe in the program,” continues Ms. Huber, who now manages the WISE office and is a mentor to students at Woodlands High School. “WISE made a big difference for me as a student, so I want to encourage others.”
