Governance of the WISE Program continues to evolve at Woodlands High School.
Two years ago, Woodlands’s WISE Task Force was supported with the addition of a weekly Steering Committee in order to rejuvenate the support of WISE in the school. Noticing low student, staff, and teacher representation at meetings, Woodlands took the following steps to get more of the school community involved with WISE:
- Moved Meetings to the Afternoon: Woodlands’s WISE Task Force used to meet in the evening. Now, the Steering Committee meets after school at 2pm. An earlier meeting time makes meetings more accessible to students, teachers, and staff.
- Increased Number of Committee Meetings: The Steering Committee meets bi-monthly, sometimes weekly, instead of once a month.
Woodlands has already seen the positive effects of these changes.
“Teachers and staff are engaged and willing to support WISE students,” said Elizabeth Huber, Woodlands staff member. “The school is on board. When the teachers and staff are behind you and working with the students, you are going to get the excitement from the students and the depths that you want out of the projects.”
Higher attendance of community members at Steering Committee meetings is Woodlands’s next goal. They would like to see more businesses and parents of current WISE students engaging with WISE.
